TMJ Therapy
Millions of Americans suffer from headaches, neck pain, tingling extremities, and clicking or popping of the jaw. These symptoms may stem from TMJ disorder, a condition caused by misalignment of the temporomandibular joints, which allow the jaw to open and close. When TMJ joints aren't properly aligned, nerves become irritated and muscles fatigued, resulting in discomfort for the patient. They may also contribute to grinding and clenching teeth, a destructive condition known as bruxism.
Dr. McKnight will perform a complete evaluation to determine if you have developed TMJ disorder. Then, he will devise a non-surgical treatment plan to correct the problem and restore your oral health. In many cases, his conservative therapy can alleviate symptoms and restore comfortable oral function. Dr. McKnight may recommend an oral appliance to reposition the jaw while you sleep. This allows muscles to rest and reduces irritation. Massage of the affected muscles, moist heat, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications can also relieve the unpleasant TMJ symptoms. In some cases, building up back teeth with restorations or using orthodontics to correct the bite may be good solutions. Dr. McKnight will evaluate your unique case and help you determine the best course of treatment to relieve your pain for the long term.
