Root Canals
An internally damaged tooth may need root canal therapy to save the tooth from extraction. Inside every tooth runs a nerve, also called the pulp, that brings nutrients to the tooth and removes waste. Injury or deep decay can cause an infection in the pulp, and as the infection grows, pressure builds up in the canals of the tooth. This causes pain and sensitivity. Ultimately, the tooth will die and the infection can spread to cause extensive damage to oral and overall health. During a root canal, the infection is removed and the pulp replaced with a manmade material. This allows the tooth to remain intact, though it is no longer living.
At our Mesquite office, you can enjoy many amenities or sedation dentistry to keep you comfortable during your root canal. Some patients feel so relaxed that they dose off. After treatment, you may feel mild soreness, which over-the-counter pain medications will control. In some cases, root canal therapy can be performed in one visit.
Call our dental office to schedule an appointment with Dr. McKnight and discuss the benefits of root canal therapy. Located in Mesquite, we welcome residents from Dallas, Rockwall, and the surrounding areas.
